I was feeling confident in my paint-making abilities until I tried Freezy Paint. I love reading about project ideas at GrowingAJeweledRose.com, and they've had great luck with the recipe. For whatever reason, though, my test-drive turned into a total mess.
Basically, you follow the same instructions for foam/bath paint: mix food coloring and shaving cream. I've done this before and enjoyed a low-mess sensory program for preschoolers--the only added step for Freezy Paint is to...put the shaving cream in the freezer. I wanted the colors to be vibrant, so I added a lot of food coloring.
It must have been way too much food coloring, though, because when I swiped my finger through the test batch, my skin stayed bright blue for two days. I'm so glad I tested this before unleashing it on my storytime. I can't imagine the semi-permanent mess it would have created. I mean no disrespect to the bloggers that have had success with this project. I just suggest test-driving this type of thing whenever possible. Maybe it works better as a 'brush' paint, instead of a 'finger' paint. I'll try it again using waaaaaay less dye next time.
