Hot Chocolate Kits

I fell in love with mason jars during the snow globe craft, so I decided to try using them for another Pinterest-inspired project. I was going to a Christmas party with a ton of adults, and I wanted to get everyone something small, but not something junky.

There are tons of different pins out there for layered mug/jar gifts. I've seen them for cookies, pancakes, brownies, soups, spa stuff, etc. I decided to make up my own version of a 'hot chocolate jar'. Most pins I read recommend using wax paper between the layers. I tried it with and without the paper. Though I did my best, the paper wasn't a perfect fit all the time, and it was difficult to get it to lay flat. For a couple of jars, you could kind of see the paper.

Without the paper, everything got mixed together and it wasn't very appetizing--or aesthetically pleasing. With the paper, the jars looked pretty cute. The only downside was that I had to keep warning everyone about the wax paper as I handed them out. Saying "If you dump it all in a cup of hot milk, you're going to have to fish out a bunch of paper discs!" kind of takes away from the magic of it all.

I used hot chocolate mix, crushed candy canes, chocolate chips, and peppermint marshmallows. Some pins suggest wrapping the marshmallows in plastic. I thought that sounded silly, but I tried it, and it worked a lot better. Otherwise, the marshmallows got kind of dirty looking from the chocolate mix.

I traced the metal disc of the mason jar lid onto a couple of pieces of glittery sticky foam, cut the circles out, and slapped them on the top of the jar. I will definitely do this craft again
