Duct Tape Workshop

image
Duct Tape is very cool right now. Walmart, The Dollar Tree, and Five Below all have inexpensive patterned duct tape. You can also buy sheets of it now—which kind of seems like cheating, until you try to create the double sided fabric yourself, while also assisting 15 middle schoolers.

I’m a big fan of cutting cardboard (or old manilla folders) using the die-cutter, then covering the die-cut in duct tape. It creates a cleaner, crisper shape, an easy surface to decorate, and it uses less tape.

Duct tape roses are quick and easy to make—duct tape bags take a bit of time and patience. The tweens I work with really like making jewelry and book covers using duct tape. A couple of them have decorated their phones with it—something I might try for myself.

I’ll continue to offer this workshop every couple of months. It’s great for gift-giving occasions, or back-to-school season. Maybe we’ll make wallets for Father’s Day? I haven’t planned that far ahead yet!

On a related note, I prepared for this program by creating a bunch of samples. When everyone arrived, they requested I make a cup out of duct tape. I think this is pretty good considering I was making it up on the spot:
