Duct Tape is very cool right now. Walmart, The Dollar Tree, and Five
Below all have inexpensive patterned duct tape. You can also buy sheets
of it now—which kind of seems like cheating, until you try to create the
double sided fabric yourself, while also assisting 15 middle schoolers.
I’m a big fan of cutting cardboard (or old manilla folders) using the
die-cutter, then covering the die-cut in duct tape. It creates a
cleaner, crisper shape, an easy surface to decorate, and it uses less
tape.
Duct tape roses are quick and easy to make—duct tape bags take a bit
of time and patience. The tweens I work with really like making jewelry
and book covers using duct tape. A couple of them have decorated their
phones with it—something I might try for myself.
I’ll continue to offer this workshop every couple of months. It’s
great for gift-giving occasions, or back-to-school season. Maybe we’ll
make wallets for Father’s Day? I haven’t planned that far ahead yet!
On a related note, I prepared for this program by creating a bunch of
samples. When everyone arrived, they requested I make a cup out of duct
tape. I think this is pretty good considering I was making it up on the
spot:
